Interning guidance counselor teaching bird nest lesson

Mr. Bruce Travers, interning guidance counselor, taught perseverance and patience using a bird nest lesson at Showell Elementary School. Showell’s second grade students observed a real bird nest, then discussed the importance of creating a safe environment to live in. Students went outside and collected twigs, leaves, paper and weeds. They glued the materials to form a nest. Then Mr. Travers used the activity to talk about creative problem solving by building a nest with found materials. They talked about how it took commitment and perseverance to finish the task. Students related the activity to building friendships and how each one looks different and has different qualities. They also discussed how friendships require patience and perseverance.
